A guidance calculation for a straight beam of constant section, with a modulus of elasticity of 69 GPa and the minimum yield strengths of EN 755-2. It does not consider buckling, local buckling of thin walls, joints or dynamic loads: for a structure, the check must be done by an engineer.

Developing this profile?

We can help with the die, the alloy and the temper, and quote the extrusion or the material.

The message is put together with what you are looking at, with no obligation.

Theoretical calculation with sharp corners, without radii or extrusion tolerances: the actual weight may vary within the tolerance of the standard. Base density 2.699 g/cm³.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the weight of an aluminium profile?

Multiply the cross-sectional area by the density of aluminium. At 2.70 g/cm³, each square millimetre of section weighs 0.0027 kg per metre. For example, a 60 × 40 × 2 mm rectangular tube has a 384 mm² section and weighs 1.04 kg/m.

How much does a 6 metre aluminium length weigh?

It is the weight per metre multiplied by 6. The same 60 × 40 × 2 mm tube weighs about 6.2 kg per 6 metre length.

What is the density of aluminium?

Pure aluminium and the most common extrusion alloys, such as 6063 and 6061, have a density of 2.70 g/cm³. 7075 reaches 2.81 g/cm³.

How do I calculate the deflection of an aluminium profile?

With the moment of inertia of the section, the span between supports and the load. For a beam supported at both ends with the load in the middle, the deflection is P·L³ / (48·E·I), with E = 69 GPa for aluminium. In the calculator you choose the shape, enter the span and the weight, and it gives you the deflection and the stress.

How much deflection is acceptable?

It depends on the use. As a reference, many specifications require the deflection not to exceed the span divided by 200, and the strictest ones, the span divided by 300. For a cantilever it is compared with twice the span.
