How the aluminium price is formed
What the LME is
The London Metal Exchange is the market where primary aluminium ingot is traded. Its cash price is the benchmark the world uses to buy and sell the metal.
Why we use the monthly average
The World Bank publishes the monthly average of the LME cash price every month under an open licence. It is a reliable, free benchmark, but it is not a daily price: the dashboard never presents it as real time.
From ingot to profile
A profile’s price is not the LME price: it adds the regional premium, the alloy, extrusion, the finish (anodising or powder coating), freight and taxes. That is why two profiles of the same weight can cost different amounts.
The dollar, separately
The metal is priced in dollars and the dollar is tracked separately: the dashboard does not convert the international price to pesos, because that sum does not reflect any real selling price.
Reference information taken from official public sources, cited for each figure. It is not financial advice or a sales quote. International aluminium is a monthly average; the dollar and the BCRA variables are updated every business day.
